The iGIS application represents a significant advancement in mobile GIS technology, providing true GIS functionality on the iPad platform. It allows users to load, view, investigate, create, and export their own spatial data over a background of map service imagery, making it suitable for professional field use.

Data import is streamlined through an exclusive import facility that supports Mac, PC, and Linux systems, or via a USB connection. Currently, ESRI Shapefiles (.shp) are supported. This facilitates seamless integration into existing GIS workflows.

One notable feature is that spatial data is stored locally on the device, enabling offline access—a critical requirement for field operations—without dependency on an internet connection. The application supports over 3000 coordinate projections, eliminating the need for data reprojection during workflows.

iGIS supports multiple layers comprising points, lines, polygons, and imagery, all customizable with user-defined styling options. Users can add comments to maps through point layers that include name and description fields and can modify or create custom data entry forms with dropdowns and predefined codes.

Layers can be exported as ESRI shapefiles for integration into enterprise GIS systems. Additional features include fast rendering through a multi-threaded map engine, support for large datasets, customizable imagery layers, and GPS functionalities such as displaying current location in a chosen projection with an integrated compass. The application also supports zooming to the current location or data extent, map panning, adjustable zoom levels, and layer visibility management.

Map styling is flexible; users can modify size, color, transparency, layer order, and visibility. Zoom scales for individual layers can be adjusted via a simple slider. Additionally, feature attributes can be accessed and interrogated by clicking directly on map elements.

Designed with GIS professionals in mind, proficiency in concepts such as layers, shapefiles, and projections will facilitate an optimal user experience with iGIS. Feedback regarding usability or desired features is encouraged to guide future enhancements.

Background GPS use is supported; however, sustained GPS activity may significantly impact battery life.
